Brachi Himelstein

Baltimore , MD

Whilst walking down the street I saw
Under a bush, a tiny paw
There was a bunny, you see
Who ran right away from me
Or maybe from the big crow's "CAW!"

Susan Haines

I don't mean to cause a sensation
But it's happening all over the nation
It's called urban sprawl
But the heart of it all
Is simply called over-population

Ryan Freebern

Kingston , RI

A snobby rich man from Nantucket
Said to wind-farm proponents, "Oh, yuck. It
Will spoil my view,
So drop it now; shoo!"
They submerged his head in a bucket

Mabel Hempstead

The world was once abiotic
With puddles of gunk, anaerobic,
The atmosphere yucky,
The ground mostly rocky --
'Til creatures appeared, microscopic.

Green cells changed the air to aerobic
And life evolved, macroscopic.
The sky was bright blue
The ocean was too,
As continents bloomed, biologic.

 Evolution continued anthropic.
Humanity, smart but myopic,
Cut down the tress,
Polluted the seas
And totalled the ozone, once globic.

CO2 made the weather chaotic --
The rain none at all or delugic.
UV zapped the plants,
Left bacterial mats,
In puddles of gunk, anaerobic.

Justin Bolognino

Brooklyn, NY

change sprouts from seeds
while leaves fall from trees
feeding earth with its waste
there's no choice but haste
so set aside the greed and change your needs!

We battle the malaise diurnal
by drinking much coffee infernal.
"If only," we prayed
"we had some fair-trade!
we'd find shade-grown glory eternal

There once was a fellow named Michael
Who wanted to help Earth recycle
He planted young trees
And said, "Won't skin knees Climbing these,
but maybe some tyke'll."

Denis Hauptly

Environment's not just a phase.
It's the choice between blue sky and haze.
We can keep the air clear
If we show that we care
By taking the bus every day.

Brian Hosey

Seattle , Washington

When I lived in northeastern realms
I learned from scoutmaster Bob Elms,
"Hike all you like,
But look around you young tyke:
the beauty of the wilds overwhelms."

John Morgan

Arlington Height, Illinois

An exec from Monsanto did cry,
Give my GM carrot a try.
It improves your vision
with such great precision
by helping you grow a third eye.

 A Bush EPA nominee said,
There s no harm in just a little lead?
Corporations cheered
while tree-huggers jeered,
meanwhile; children are born half brain dead.

I go to an organic food store,
where everything costs a bit more.
But the EPA lied
about a pesticide
so now my head pounds and I m sore.

Once I was as strong as an ox.
Then I tried a dose of Vioxx.
Now I m feeble and weak
And can barely speak.
There was no warning on the box.

I returned to my childhood haunt
to see my former neighbors were gaunt.
The toxins in both rivers
destroyed kidneys and livers.
I attended the wake of my aunt

Title: Portland Harbor , 8am , July 25, 2005

Once an overconfident young osprey
Had thought that last Monday was his day.
A bald eagle he harrassed
But the salmon he cherished
Wound up eaglet kibble anyway.

Both of these (ed note – JP also submitted a Haiku) are in response to an actual bald eagle-osprey midair battle over a good-sized salmon about 30 feet above my office parking lot as I drove in to work last Monday.  It made my whole day.  (The eagle was about 4 times the size of the osprey, and the osprey eventually gave up, leaving the eagle to return to his/her nest; but the osprey has my lifelong admiration for sheer cheek in the face of overwhelming odds!)

I once met a bumpy old toad
home demolished, made way for a road
what 'bout the enviroment?
we surely must soon relent
and leave Mother Nature on her own

It is up in the sky
that the beautiful birds fly.
Let's us keep the air pure
so that our feathered friends can endure.

It is in the ocean that our exquisite creatures swim.
Let us keep the waters clean
so that our slippery friends can be seen.
Please help save our environment and do your part,
so that mankind will not permanently depart.

Ryan Freebern

I know of a young shop mechanic
Who only eats food that's organic.
When given a Coke,
He started to choke:
The sight of that stuff made him panic!

Terri Anderson

ive been here since the day of my birth
the oceans and skies

or there'll be nothing here thats of worth

Gary Isse

there was once a greener life
before people and the earth were in strife
we played in her fields
she gave us our meals
so we should give her our thanks every night

Gary Isse

there was once a time when people lived from the earth,
they ate her fruit, plowed her land, always trying not to hurt
they had love and respect
for all, even insects,
so maybe it's time to revert

Alexis Kageyama

There once was a stork named Jay,
Who delivered babies all day.
One baby was bad,
The mother got mad,
And plastered the poor guy with clay.

Alexis Kageyama

There once was a cat named Ferd,
Who could never kill only one bird,
He'd catch two or three,
Climb up in a tree!
But his owners put a bell on his collar so he could be heard.

Alexis

There once was a tree named Fred,
He once met a logger named Ned,
Ned chopped him down,
And Fred gave a frown,
But now poor Fred is dead.

Lindsay Kageyama

-the Organic Corndog-

There once was an organic corn dog,
It was shaped like a log,
Free of pestisides, too,
Good for me and you,
And they also do not produce smog.

Simi Weiss

Brooklyn , NY

The earth gives us what to feed on,
But please eat your greens and not the stuff that will be gone.
Go Organic,
But don't panic,
For being organic there is no con.

Barb Hrabe

Lindsborg , Kansas

As I sit here in the dark,
I see a mouse who thinks he's smart.
He steals food from the kittys dish,
because he loves the smell of fish.
Although he doesn't know,
that I've traveled hi and low,
I found a trap that doesn't snap and free
he will be to live under a tree!

Jonathan Weiss

Ridgewood , NJ

A young child somewhere in her threes
Sits cuddled upon mother's knees
With questioning eyes
that won't tolerate lies
She cries, "Mother, what happened to trees?"

Rebecca Iles

Oneida , NY

Go forth, help our dear Mother Earth,
Recycle, show Her what She's worth.
Each knows what to do,
Even young ones, like you,
Now pitch in, help with Her rebirth.

Eunice Perkins

The sun smiles without any mirth
as he watches the rape of the earth
He sees as we blunder
And tear Earth asunder
Until it no longer has worth.

Jessica Kuxhause

Bayside, Wisconsin

Love the Earth, and go organic
Don't send the world into a major panic
By driving your car too often a day
You'll cause global warming, driving that way
So be good to the earth, and be more botanic

Deborah Edick Bumpus

Canandaigua NY

Nothing is reusable, all has gone astray
Tell me how it happened that we throw so much away?
Plastic fills the landfills, diapers are no longer washed
Why was there nary a  forethought, to what this all would cost?

When I say cost, I do not mean money, or plasticized credit cards
But rather the purity of nature's soil, whose delicacies are in shards
No price can be placed on the beauty that should BE
I do believe the answer lies within you and within me.

It seems that all is

Michael Ross

There once was a planet named Earth,
with landfills expanding her girth.
But then thoughtful thrift
and your caring gift
led to an eco-rebirth.

Anne Nadel

Marshfield , Vermont

Our leaders don't pay any heed
To a planet in desperate need.
So people, take action
To get satisfaction,
And obliterate corporate greed.

Kati Sharpe

North Charleston , South Carolina

There once was a planet called Earth
Its purpose to humans give Birth
A word to the wise
Before this place dies
Love this Orb for all it is Worth.

Rafting Down the Grand Canyon

There is a canyon so grand
With rocks and fossils and sand,
On the river we'd float
In our small pontoon boat,
And feel like a gnat in God's hand!

RESILIENCE

Tropic breezes will blow and I bend
Fronds may snap and may break, but I mend.
With the gale I can sway
Through tomorrow today:
A palm s roots hold on fast, my dear friend.

Angela Theresa Egic

Lancaster , Pennsylvania

My lady is the earth and sea;
Admire her beauty, yet let her be...
Do not scar her colorful land,
throwing trash upon her sand;
For she is the very life of you and me!

Beverly Martinez

Ann Arbor , Michigan

Today is "live for the moment" time.
What you see, hear, taste, smell and feel.
It's every ounce of your being,
taking charge of the clock's turning wheels

  Take time to cultivate the soil;
and by hand, put each plant in place.
 Then spread manure and water;
and watch each bloom enter the race.

  The race to grow, bud and sprout;
 without all those harsh pesticides.
 And with tender, loving care
bear fruits, that befit human strides.

 There maybe need of coverage;
 due to the brightness of seering sun;
and the O-zone layers threatened doom
to nature, mankind  - bar none!

For centuries, natural ways were best.
 They didn't use synthetics,
Chemicals or plastic  to make clothing or take care of crops.
And no preservatives kept their food classics.

Let's get back to these natural ways.
Organics are safer, purer, more nourishing.
For our health, you could ask nothing better:
health costs would decline 'stead of flourishing.

Nicole Civita

The once was a planet named Earth.
Vibrant, but humans exploited its worth.
Green turned to gray.
Night same as day.
Not true if we conserve with mirth!

little the pet store could offer
all the good fruit
and the veggies to boot
were covered in pesticide slobber!

who almost got choked by a weed.
He soaked up the sun,

Now a little rain's all that she needs!

Kate Reddy

There once was a girl somewhat manic
Synthetics they caused her to panic
She fell for a boy
Who ate only soy
And kelp from the deep, dark Atlantic

Borrowed Time

There was an old woman from Delaware,
she had many, many herbs, flowers, and vegetables everywhere.
She had a big family you see,
five children in all--aged 12, 6, 4, and twins who were 3,
so they all tried to live by an ecological philosophy.

As soon as the frost danger would pass,
out to the gardens and thru the tall grass,
to work up the ground and play in the dirt,
find the big worms and give them a squirt!

Homes for butterflies, ladybugs and birds were made,
vegetables and herbs were grown, harvested and saved.

They all learned day by day, year by year, side by side, how kind to this earth we must be,
mother nature deserves apprectation, respect, and loyalty
because it's only for a short time that she will extend her gracious hospitality.
